On behalf of the Organizing Committee of ISEM XIX, it is a great pleasure to announce that the next CIRP Conference on Electro Physical and Electro Chemical Machining will take place for the second time in Bilbao in 2018, 15 years after the ISEM XIII held in 2001. This edition of the conference will be jointly organized by the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) and the research centre IK4-TEKNIKER.
The conference, originally entitled “International Symposium for Electro-Machining” (ISEM) was held, for the first time in 1960 in Czechoslovakia. Since then, the most significant advances in the field of Electro Physical and Electro Chemical machining technologies have found a common place for scientific and industrial discussion in this conference. Since the 17th edition, celebrated in 2013, ISEM proudly takes place under the auspices of the CIRP (the International Academy for Production Engineering).
Although during many years the main focus of the conference has been set on EDM and ECM-based technologies, ISEM has always given place to alternative “non-conventional” methods such as abrasive water jet machining, laser technologies, high energy beam processes, and other hybrid processes.
No doubt, the impact of additive manufacturing on research and industry has been enormous in the last years. The successful ISEM XVIII conference, recently held in Tokyo, has shown very interesting advances in technologies such as Fused Deposition Modelling. ISEM XIX will continue with this line. Contributions focusing on hybrid methods and additive manufacturing will be welcome inside the scope of the conference.
The Organizing Committee of the 19th. CIRP Conference on Electro Physical and Chemical Machining expresses its commitment with the young researchers that will certainly lead the next generation of scientists in the fields of ISEM in the next decades. The Organizing Committee counts on ONA’s sponsorship providing the financial support for 10 grants to award the best research works presented in ISEM by Ph.D. candidates. An Award Committee will be in charge of selecting the best research papers, taking into account aspects such as scientific quality of the paper, its contribution with respect to the State of the Art, and the quality of the presentation.
The ISEM XIX, will be held in Bilbao at the Hall of the University of the Basque Country (BIZKAIA ARETOA). This building was designed by the Portuguese architect Alvaro Siza (Pritzker Prize 1992) and is located at the heart of the newly developed area of Abandoibarra. This area represents a clear example of the reinvention of Bilbao, where a former industrial port area today represents the main example of the historic process of renovation and reinvention which made Bilbao to become a cosmopolitan, open, welcoming, lively, elegant and modern city addressed to the new challenges of the 21st century.
On behalf of the organizing committee of ISEM XIX, I would like to thank to all persons involved in the different Committees for their collaboration, crucial for the development of a successful ISEM XIX.
